OPEN REEL TAPE RECORDER

It is also called Reel-to reel audio tape recording. It is the earliest example of tape recorder. It was used to hold recording mediums on a reel, which used to be contained within a cassette.

THE ANTI DRUG CAMAPAIGN

DRUGS
Many people, especially the youth, make use of illegal drugs.
Many young people try drugs and they all have different reasons: they do it for sun, curiosity, to be like their friends, or simply to break rules. Whatever the reason is the use of drugs is harmful. Using street drugs might make the person feel well, but they damage health.
The use of drugs and alcohol together is a greater danger.
These are some of the effects they do when used together.
  • They each may increase the side effects of the other substance and can cause coma or death with some drugs.
  • The person who makes use of them might get a higher dose of a drug more than what he/she is used to get and this can be fatal.
  • Serious infections such as HIV and hepatitis.
  • Accidents, arguments and fights because of the drug effects or the drunkenness.
  • Using drugs can lead to serious mental illness, such as psychosis or depression
  • Can lead to health problems and to overdose.

ABOUT DRUGS

There are two different types of drug: medical drugs and illegal drugs. However this campaign is about illegal drugs.

Illegal drugs exist in different shape, size and types and each drug produces different effect on people.
People take drugs for many reasons: boredom, experimentation, to fit in, etc. Many drugs cause dependence.

Drugs are divided in categories, or classes. The classes ( A, B and C) are decided according to the level of penalty for possession and dealing.

Possession:Dealing:
Class AEcstasy, LSD, heroin, cocaine, crack, magic mushrooms, amphetamines (if prepared for injection).Up to seven years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.Up to life in prison or an unlimited fine or both.
Class BAmphetamines, Cannabis, Methylphenidate (Ritalin), Pholcodine.Up to five years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.Up to 14 years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.
Class CTranquilisers, some painkillers, Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Ketamine.Up to two years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.Up to 14 years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.
All the drugs listed above are treated with the law called Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
This law states that it is an offence to:
  • possess a controlled substance unlawfully
  • possess a controlled substance with intent to supply it
  • supply or offer to supply a controlled drug (even if it is 2

ANTI DRUG CAMPAIGN

This is the anti drug campaign I decided to promote.
It is called 'Make your choice'.
It is made for warning teenagers about the risks and the effects that drugs have on people's life.
It is colourful. It has many images and also much text. The text has got headlines and paragraphs. The paragraphs are not quite clear because they have small characters, but on the other hand the headlines are really clear and they summarise everything.
The message sets the reader, or the target audience, in the position of thinking over the acts and thoughts; as a mather of facts it asks to decide if to live or to die.
Through my survey I understood that some people think it is crouded, while others think it is good, interesting and also think it is got good informations.
I wrote a straight and a simple message that says to say no to drugs.

How long did you run the campaign for?
When I first strarted the production of my campaign I decided to do different campaign posters so at the end I would have had more choice. After 2 o 3 weeks I had to choose between four campaign posters and the best way to do it was through a survey. I decided to ask teenagers, who are the particular target audience, to tell me which of my posters they prefered and the reason.

What would you do next time to refine your campaign?
I think I might try to get many other backgrounds so I might see if it still looks crowdy or not, or I might try to change the layout or the text style or words. I might investigate deeper on drugs and maybe get something more original to write.
In spite of everything I think my campaign poster is good, successful and sadisfactory!

What have you learned from researching, prepering, planning and conducting a campaign?
I think this work on the campaign have made me understand more that everything has a language: the way you talk to an adult is not the way you talk to a kid, and vice versa. As a matter of fact one of my posters was addressed to adults and in fact only 2 teenagers, out of 27, said they prefered it. Through this anti drug campaign I also got more informed about drug effects and I'm really happy of having this opportunity.
Thanks to everyone who helped me work it out.

My Anti-Drug Campaign

DO YOU LIKE MY CAMPAIGN POSTER?

These four are my initial ideas for the anti-drug campaign.
Their target audience are different.
I decided to analyse the four posters after a survey i did by asking to young people in my college and other places which of the posters they preferred.

The first one is named 'Be pure'. It is aimed to men and women of every age because it is simple and its message is straight and it is also a command. Many people liked it as well as many people didn't like it. The ones that liked said it had a deep message and meaning. The people who declared to don't like it said it was too simple and they said that the message was not all that clear. It had 10 votes over 27.

The second one, 'One life left', is aimed to an older audience, approximately from 19 yrs old up ways because it has a strong message that sometimes young teenagers don't understand and it also looks boring. As a matter of fact it had only 2 votes over 27.

The third one is named 'Make your choice'. It is made for young teenagers because it' s colorful, some things are just drawings and there is also message that clearly says: 'Prevent teenage drug use'. It has got some information about the side effects caused by the use of drug. At my survey some people said they didn't like it because it was too crowded, but it was still the most voted and successful campaign poster of all the ones I did. It had 12 votes over 27

The fourth one is 'Just say no'. It has a simple design in which there is only one picture. It has a clear message, but it also has a bad-looking picture. It is good for everybody: men, women, teenagers, young and old people. It had only 3 votes over 27.

Campign diary 5/03/2010

Today I continued my work on the campaign.
Mine is anti-drug campaign. I then started a research on drugs and their effects and I printed out my research.
I then thought of working on a drug page, to add some pictures, headlines and some other information.
I then decided to start doing a campaign poster and to do it on my blog as well.

INTERVIEW TO PAUL

Paul is a journalist who works for a newspaper called The Observer. He's been a journalist for 20 years.
He's also a sub-editor (that is someone who writes articles and make them sound interesting), and he writes a monthly article about celebrities, or people like Robert Maxwell.
He studied at a college called Printing College. Since he finished college he has worked for a music paper called Sound, for a paper called Echoes, and for the current Observer.
Paul likes his job because he is interested in music, films, books and much more and most a times he gets himself involved in such things.
He talked about some of the terminology in journalism, such as "copy", "pool grade" and "stand first".
'Copy' is the text in articles, newspapers, magazines, an so on.
'Pool grade' is the part of the article that catches attention; it might be colored, with bigger characters, or different styles.
'Stand first' is the little part of an article that works as introduction.
Paul told us that they always have deadlines at work and if they don't do the work within that time they might risk to be sacked. Deadlines are very important.
I think this introductory is really interesting because it gives us a opportunity of indirect contact with journalism. I also think if someone was interested in this industry sector, somehow he might have found some help in his final decision.

CREATING A RECORD 11/2/2010

TH GRAMOPHONE

by Emile Berliner

Emile Beliner was the first inventor to start recording on flat disks or records instead of the cylinder. The first records were made of glass, later zinc, or plastic. The Gramophone had a needle that read the grooves in the record by vibrations an transmitted the informations to the gramophone speaker. His disks were the first sound recordings that could be mass-produced from molds.
Berliner founded 'The Gramophone Company' for the mass production of his discs and the gramophones that played them back.
To help promote his gramophone Berliner persuaded popular artists to record their music using his system and later he used Francis Barraud's painting of 'His Masters voice' as hiscompany's official trademark.
Emile Berliner founded many other companies for the production of the gramophone in many other countries.

CREATING A RECORD 9-02-10

PHONOGRAPH
The phonograph was the result of two inventions, the telegraph and the telephone, that Thomas Edison was developing. In 1877 he was working on a machine that would write telegraphic messages on paper through speaking vibrations. These vibrations made indentations in the paper. Subsequently he changed the paper to a metal cylinder with tin foil wrapped around it. The machine had two diaphragm-and-needle units so the first one could record a sound and the second could play back the same sound.
Edison took the phonograph to the office of Scientific American in New York City and showed it to the staff.
In January 1878 the machine was already a success, but only experts knew how to use it, and the tin wouldn't last much.
In March 1878 Edison offered many future uses for the phonograph, including letter writing, phonographic books, music boxes, etc.
Some time later other inventors started to develop Edison's phonograph.
In 1880 Alexander Graham Bell was awarded for the invention of the telephone.
Chicheter A. Bell, Alexander's cousin, and Charles Sumner Tainter made some improvements to Edison's invention by using wax instead of the tin foil and a floating stylus instead of a rigid needle.
On 1886 they were awarded and their machine was exhibited to the public as the graphophone.
The Edison Phonograph Company was formed on October 8 1887 and his Machine was in the market. The Improved Phonograph was introduced in May 1888 and later even the Perfected Phonograph.

History of radio play 8-02-10

Radio plays were first performed in the 1927, when networks began adapting short stories for broadcast and larger stations began to develop programs using announcers or narrators.
Before the 1920's most broadcasts were one time events consisting mainly of talk and music.
In the late 1920's many network sponsored programs with the duration of one hour were performed. During this period the most popular radio performances were musical varieties and concert music programs.
Song-and-patter teams, two people talking between songs, became popular during this period; later it became an only-patter comedy act. The Amos 'n' Andy show was one of the first of these comedy sows, and it was presented five nights a week for 15 minutes each.
In the early 1930's national advertisement started buying air-time and sponsor programs for radio advertising and the consequence was the development of many new program forms. Among the new program types were: dramatized news programs, daytime "soap opera" serialized drama, after school juvenile serialized adventure drama, and many others.
In the early 1940's radio programs reflected America's involvement in the war and the number of hours per week devoted to news broadcast nearly doubled.
During the 1944-45 season networks offered 47 hours a week of dramatic programs during the evening and on Sunday and 25 of these hours were offered from thriller drama programs.
In the early years of television it was too expensive to create new programs, so the forms that existed as radio plays were moved to television, so it was possible to see on TV what was heard on radio.
